- We conducted a field experiment on oviposition behavior and caterpillar performance in a population of Maculinea alcon in Portugal (Wynhoff et al. 2014, Arnaldo et al. 2014). To investigate possible effects of climate change on the flexibility of populations at contrasting edges of their range this experiment has to be repeated in the Netherlands. Two students will have the opportunity to do their major or internship.

LIFE+ Blues in the Marshes and Maculinea nausithous Posterholt: Field experiment on adapted management regime to attract Myrmica ants for Maculinea butterflies

- For Maculinea teleius and M. nausithous, habitat close to existing populations has been restored. To attract Myrmica host ants, various actions have been taken, like translocating sods, planting shrubs, placing dead wood, leaving vegetation uncut. The aim is to offer habitat conditions under which young mated queens can start building a new colony, thereby increasing habitat quality for the butterflies as well. We are mainly interested in the effect on Myrmica ants but depending on the experience of the candidate(s) more aspects of biodiversity can be part of the study. The analysis should include data collected in the past (starting situation).

LIFE+ Blues in the Marshes: Field experiment on establishment of sod cut plots in restoration areas to benefit habitat of Maculinea butterflies

- The LIFE+ project 'Blues in the Marshes' aims on enlarging habitat of the endangered butterfly Maculinea teleius, the habitat itself also consisting of threatened vegetation types. We conducted a field experiment in 2013 and 2016, translocating 126 vegetation plots to 14 nature restoration sites at various ages of development after soil removal. We are interested in the development of the whole ecosystem, needed for successful colonization of the butterfly. Research questions could concern the hostplant Sanguisorba officinalis, the vegetation types Junco-Molinion and Arrhenaterion, the Myrmica host ants and their main food source Collembola. Within this experiment, several (groups of) students will have the opportunity to do their major or internship. If you are interested in exploring new aspects of nature conservation, the work on Collembola offers you exactly these challenges. The studies will be conducted in N2000 "Vlijmens Ven, Moerputten, Bossche Broek".

LIFE+ Blues in the Marshes: The impact of vegetation characteristics on Myrmica ant populations

- The aim of this study is to investigate whether, next to management, vegetation composition and structure influence ant occurrences and abundances. Most important are Myrmica ants as host ants for endangered Maculinea butterfly populations. Two approaches are possible: a.) studying ant communities of road verges and nature reserves using the monitoring data since 1996, b.) studying colonization of newly restored nature in comparison to nature reserves within a LIFE+ project in the Province of Brabant and a restoration project in the Province of Limburg on conservation of Maculinea butterflies.

- Fieldwork from June till September with a peak in July-August. Field work will be done in the nature reserves and road verges around Den Bosch in Brabant. On the monitoring plots, vegetation relevees and vegetation structure measurements have to be made. The collected data will be analyzed including ant and management data.

Ontwikkeling van insectenfauna op Trintelzand (i.s.m. Waardenburg Ecology)

- Recent is de Houtribdijk versterkt door in het aangrenzende Markermeer het Trintelzand aan te leggen: een stelsel van ondieptes met grotere en kleinere eilandjes van zand en slib. Naast waterveiligheid moet het Trintelzand ook geleidelijke land-waterovergangen opleveren en zo bijdragen aan het ecologisch systeem van het Markermeer. Insecten spelen hierin een belangrijke rol als onderdeel van het voedselweb en als indicator van de ecologische ontwikkelingen die zich hier snel opvolgen. Vanaf half mei ga je minstens elke 2 weken naar het grootste eiland van het Trintelzand. Je beheert de insectenvallen, bepaalt de biomassa van de insecten en bekijkt welke insecten aanwezig zijn: slankpootvliegen, sluipwespen, dansmuggen en nog veel meer! In overleg kies je een of enkele insectengroepen voor verdiepend onderzoek in verschillende habitats.

Er zijn meerdere onderzoeksvragen over voor- en achteruitgang van soorten die we hiermee beantwoord zouden willen zien, maar we zoeken met nadruk iemand die kennis van en plezier heeft in het werken met grote hoeveelheden data, en al thuis is in databases en/of R.
